Mates in the Market

One of the things I’m most grateful for in my life is my friends and in the 25 years that I’ve lived in Wood Green, some of these friends have been made in the Market a few doors down from my home. My MS legs mean I haven’t always been able to walk there but I can always see it from my house and there’s been a deep reassurance all these years because of it. The other emerging buildings are less appealing but that’s perhaps a wider conversation. 🤔

It’s a market in a Mall and it’s a place where you can get pretty much all that you need for a hahalala life. A little low on organic stuff but lots of deliciousness nonetheless. Oftentimes, it’s only needed a smile to open a conversation and it’s magic is in its mix .

We come from everywhere in the world and this week, in conversations with a couple from Syria, a mother and daughter en route to the Greek Orthodox Church, a trader who once lived in Israel, a Caribbean family of five going to church, a Sikh man and a Spurs supporter with the softest heart, it felt like we are all so closely connected, even when we don’t know one another.

There is something so very valuable and nourishing in relishing what connects us and as some of us spoke of the pain in the world right now, it was clear that beyond anger and pain, we all want the same thing and it is best found together. In our hearts with deep listening and loving speech. We want to be healthy and happy and to be able to love and laugh freely.

Wood Green gets a bad press sometimes and for sure it is a lively, noisy place that has its problems amd looks like it has seen better days along the high street.

Yet, sometimes it feels important to note the magic moments because they do exist and in these times dark times, we need our human magic more than ever.

This weekend, I’m in Devon. It is beautiful and fresh and in the night, I hear owls. A lovely place to reset yet surprisingly, I am looking forward to getting home.

In these times, gratitude feels so very nourishing and I am deeply grateful for the life I live in Wood Green, surrounded by people of the world with big hearts.

🙏🏽💝💫
